Architecture and Nature: Falling Water

Falling Water is an infamous and remote house designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright which beautifully cantilevers over a waterfall.  This evening I have been listening to a Studio 360 programme about this iconic building.  They feature accounts from architects, visitors of Falling Water and nearby residents discussing what makes this unique building an important American icon.

Studio 360 have a diverse range of audio programmes all under the umbrella of pop arts and culture.

Post War Architecture in London

As I'm sitting in London's Barbican Centre doing a spot of weekend work, I decided to seek out and listen to a podcast about the architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon who are behind this iconic building.

The talk is part of 'The Architects Who Made London' series.  This particular recording features an introduction by Maxwell Hutchinson whilst Elain Harwood discusses the vision behind the Barbican's buildings and spaces.

LSE on Cities, Design and Climate Change

This talk from LSE, is an academic overview of the future design of cities in the context of climate change.  The speakers include Saskia Sassen, Richard Sennet and Jonathon Porritt, each providing their own insights on the topic.

As cities contribute up to 75 percent of total carbon emissions, this is a talk we should all listen to.  Saying that, I would save it for a time when you are highly alert (maybe even with a double espresso by your side!) as the speakers express themselves from a very theoretical point of view, sometimes lacking emotion.  If you do manage to get to the end of the talk, you will be rewarded by having a better understanding of the complex problems at play within this subject.

LSE have a large archive of equally informative podcasts on critical topics, ranging from economics through to art and science.

Taking a Dip into Zumthor's Psyche

In a former life I used to work in architecture, and although these days I've changed my focus to the digital world I still have a tendency towards oohing and aahing over a door handle that works beautifully or a space that immerses me in calm.

So this morning over breakfast whilst listening to architect Peter Zumthor being interviewed by radio show ' Swiss by Design' I was reminded of my wider passion for design.  Having visited Therme Vals in Switzerland around a year ago I was eager to hear what the man behind this serene and touchy-feely building had to say.  On listening, I was not surprised to hear that Zumthor has a very captivating deep audio presence and although the content of his ideas on architecture are pragmatic and rational, the overall impression of his approach comes across as poetical.

If you enjoy buildings and have an appreciation of the design intentions behind them then I can't recommend this interview enough, perhaps followed by a quick overview of your current finances and swift booking of a trip to Therme Vals!
