Layed Off? Grab Some Lemons & Make Lemonade!

Whilst some manage to walk away with a handsome package of cash after being made redundant, many of us are not in such a position.  Today, I listened to a recent On Point programme featuring stories of people who are layed off, and how they've managed to reinvent themselves amidst this recession.

Documentary film 'Lemonade' and the recent George Clooney film 'Up in the Air' get heavily mentioned; I've not watched Lemonade as yet, but having just watched 'Up in the Air' can't recommend it enough.

Changing Career because of the Recession

Many of us may have recently change careers due to the recession, and will know how difficult it can be.  NPR's 'All Things Considered' has a new three part series which looks at exactly this.

In the first programme, 'Laid off Furniture Workers try to Leap to Google' we hear from people of Lenoir, a southern USA town, where the main industry was furniture making.  Having lost their furniture jobs to China, the people of this town have had to re-train and re-educate themselves for finding work and in this case many of them moved into IT.

Furniture making to programming sounds like a dramatic shift, and this short 7 minute audio presents individuals who have made this radical change due to financial circumstances.
